How many funerals can you hold for a sardine? On La Palma, at least five. Los Llanos and Santa Cruz have already held theirs, but Puntalllana’s is on Friday night at 10 pm, and it’s got a 1960s theme. Public dance afterwards. The most famous sardine’s funeral on the island is at Los Sauces. This year it will be on Saturday 19th, with batucada (serious percussion) at 8 pm, drag…

Roadworks and Road closures in La Palma

For a couple of years now, we’ve had major roadworks on the road from Los Sauces to Barlovento and beyond into Garafia. They’re straightening out as many of the bends as possible, which often means building a big wall and filling in behind it. Battle of Lepanto in Barlovento on Sunday

Lots of traditional embroidery and baskets, of course, but also things I’d never seen before, like tied-dyed baby-clothes and ceramic-and-feather dragons. Handmade glass…

Rescheduled Sardine’s Funerals

It poured with rain last Friday, so Los Sauces have rescheduled their sardine’s funeral to Saturday 14th at 9:30 pm. This is a pity, because now it clashes with Barlovento’s sardine’s funeral, at 10:30 pm the same night.

Yesterday’s drive to Barlovento was very nice, even though we didn’t go for the best of reasons (see previous post.) We got to the local police station, and found it shut. So we popped into the bar and had a coffee and a nibble. Then Theresa remembered that the insurance firm had given her a photocopied list with all the phone numbers for all the police stations on the island….
