Rocks on the Road

Rocks on the road to the Roque de Los Muchachos
November 25, 2018

La Palma is the steepest inhabited island in the wold, so it’s in a losing battle with gravity. Sometimes rocks fall on the road, particularly after heavy rain, a freeze or a thaw. (Of course the last two only happen at high altitude.) Normally the roads get cleared pretty quickly, but the road to the observatory takes a little longer, maybe a day and a half. Then you get to…

Road closures between the observatory and Santa Cruz

March 12, 2018

They’re working on the LP4 road at Los Andennes, near the spectacular view into the Caldera. So the road between the observatory and Santa Cruz will be closed every day in both directions from 09:00 – 13:00 and 16:00 – 19:00.  The road from the Observatory down to Llano Negro in Garafia is not affected. From Santa Cruz this takes about two hours, whether you go through Tijarafe or Barlovento. Allow…

Roadworks on the Roque Road

The road from Santa Cruz to the Roque (LP-4)is closed for repairs at the top between km 32 the Los Andennes viewpoint (the spectacular one that  looks out over the Caldera) and km 35, the Observatory turnoff. They’ve been working on the drainage ditches at the side of the road for some time, but now that they’re putting down a new layer of asphalt, the road is completely closed…

Roadworks in Barlovento

There are roadworks on the main road between Barlovento and Gallegos – the LP1. They only last for about 10 km, but as you can see, the road currently looks like a rally-type video game. I’m sure it’ll be great when they’ve finished. But in the mean time I recommend allowing extra time, and avoiding it at night.

Roadworks and Road closures in La Palma

For a couple of years now, we’ve had major roadworks on the road from Los Sauces to Barlovento and beyond into Garafia. They’re straightening out as many of the bends as possible, which often means building a big wall and filling in behind it. It’s going to be great when they finish, but it does mean that in many places the traffic is one way, so that you have to…

North Road Closing

We’ve had major roadworks in the north of the island for some time, with some places reduced to one lane, so that you have to wait for traffic lights. Now they’ll be closing the road completely at km 24, just north of Los Sauces, twice a day. The road will be closed Monday – Friday 9:30 am – 12:30 am and 4 pm – 7 pm.
