On Thursday I went up to the Roque, and I was surprised by progress on the Large Size Telescope. Every time I see it, it’s more impressive. Most of the mirror segments have been fitted now. I’m looking forward to the day they remove the white covering and replace the reddish brown counterweght with the camera support. I believe the inauguration is planned for October.

Last night there were star parties all over La Palma to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Starlight Declaration, and each municipality turned off the streetlights near the star party from 10 pm to 11 pm. The digger’s started wotk on the foundations for the Large Size Telescope I gather the plan is to dig down 3 m, which is less than I’d thought for such a big structure. But the the MAGIC telescope is very light for its size, so perhaps the LST will be too. Cross posted to http://sheilacrosby.com
